Although clinicians often ask on intake forms if there is abuse in the home, the most common answer received is “no”. But in reality, 3 or 4 out 10 clients have been affected by domestic abuse, whether they understand it or not. Included are many handouts and articles that are copyrighted by ARMS – Abuse Recovery Ministry & Services. These lessons include:

How Domestic Violence Affects Your Ministry. In this first lesson, you will gain understanding about how vast domestic violence is based on national statistics. You be able to better recognize that many of the people you work with have been or are being abused, regardless of the intake forms. You will learn about the impact of abuse on women and children, and how it seems to pass from one generation to the next.

Recognizing the Cycle of Abuse. In this lesson, you will learn to recognize the cycle of abuse. If a person can recognize it, they can step out of this repetitive cycle and ultimately end the abuse in their life. (Note: this lesson is repeated in “Abuse Awareness & Recovery”)

Understanding Power & Control. During this lesson, we will discuss the eight ways most abusive behaviors present themselves. You will receive an in-depth understanding of psychological abuse, property abuse verbal abuse and much more. (Note: this lesson is repeated in “Abuse Awareness & Recovery”)

Signs of Abuse & Trafficking in Your Clients. We will guide you to a better way to determine potential abuse, including signs of potential abuse in a client from childhood to a current intimate relationship. We will also cover possible warning signs that a client has been trafficked. You’ll gain some practical ways to begin addressing abuse even if your client doesn’t see it.

Understanding the Barriers to Leaving Domestic Abuse. There are numerous barriers victims must overcome in order to find their way out of an abusive relationship. This is a complex issue with no easy or simple solutions. In this lesson we cover what a victim is thinking, the obstacles they must overcome, and what prevents themfrom reaching out.

How to Help Your Clients. In this lesson we will talk about ways we should and shouldn’t advocate when working with a client who is experiencing domestic abuse. We will discuss how you can walk alongside them, encouraging them in the difficult but healthy choices that need to be made and helping them in their healing process. We will also dicuss varied healing modalities.
