I’ve always had a sweet tooth. Ever since I was young, chocolates and ice cream have been my kryptonite. I would go to great lengths to get my hands on whatever candies were kept in the kitchen. One time, I committed the ultimate sin any child was capable of doing. I lied to my parents. A box of chocolate-covered cherries was reason enough for my disobedience. I wish I could say I regretted it to this day, but I’m not sure that’s true.

I blamed it on my brother

What made my wrongdoing very wrong was that I had eaten the chocolates knowing they were a gift to our neighbors. I even went to the extent of blaming it on my brother, but it wasn’t long before the truth came to light. I couldn’t hide under my lie forever.

The same thing can be said when we are at the receiving end of sin.

In 1 Kings 13 and 14, Jeroboam is judged by the Lord for his evildoing and his house is cut off. When his son falls sick, Jeroboam plots a scheme. “Go to the prophet Ahijah who is blind, and disguise herself so that we may receive help.” He ordered her. Their plan of deception is unsuccessful, as the Lord warns Ahijah of their ploy. As soon as Jeroboam’s wife arrives, Ahijah hears the sound of her feet and greets her, asking, “Why are you disguised?”

The lure of sin makes us believe that we will not be caught or seen. This is partially why those who are abusive carry on in their wrongful behavior. The truth, however, is that we are protected by the One who loves us and who will intervene and protect us when we are harmed.

Evil cannot stay in its disguise. Evil does not have the last say.

It will not win because we serve a victorious God.

If you have been abused, He reminds you of how much He loves you. Abuse is not part of His plan for your life, and He will faithfully reveal the glory He has in store for you, His beloved daughter.
