In my quiet time this morning, I read a passage from 1 Kings 6 which described Solomon’s process in building a temple for God. The author laid out the mighty work executed by many to fulfill the Lord’s request. “Costly stones” created the foundation and cedar beams enclosed the building. The most impressive detail, however, was one that I had quickly glanced over before realizing its magnitude.

I Kings 6:7

“In building the temple, only blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built.”

There was not a sound heard on-site throughout the building process. All the hard work was completed elsewhere so that the stone and wood pieces were finished and ready to go on arrival.

This is a testament to how God works in His people. Some of His greatest work in the Kingdom can happen quietly. Maybe even unnoticeable in passing and taking its sweet time. After all, the temple took seven years to build before it was ready to be used as a place of worship.

God Is Being Quiet

Our God is a God of harvest and seasons. His work is delicate and gradual. Though we may not realize it ourselves, He is already doing the heavy-handed work to lay our foundations. To bring us to a place where we are ready to devote everything to Him. In our long periods of waiting, we can be patient in knowing that He is moving for the good of all His people. In time, we will reap a bountiful harvest. Though He may be quiet now in the process, His declaration of His love for you will roar when the work is finished.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What parts of your life do you feel He’s been quietly working on?
  2. Do you ever wish to “speed up” the process?
  3. How can you exercise patience and obedience in the waiting?

Lord, I thank you for all the ways you are working in my life, even when I’m not aware of it. I pray that you let your good work be known in its time. Let me be a patient, productive servant in the meantime. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
